Welcome, to the clays that offer "more possibilities" to model and make forms.

For those makers who think "by hand", eco friendly ceramic paperclay serves human imagination like no other medium can.

Rosette

Above: The join of soft paperclay to totally dry paperclay with paperclay slurry as adhesive will survive drying and firing with no cracks. To attach fresh soft "leaves" to a bone dried "plant" form like this would not succeed if it were made only in tradtional clay.

However the paperclay recipe must be properly balanced in order to get high performance benefits like that shown above.

what is paperclay?

Paper clay ceramic is a user and eco-friendly water based affordable modeling media made of clay blended with cellulose fiber from paper pulp, recyled paper pulp when possible. To get the a high performance result the right balance of paper pulp is blended in with pottery clay. Artists around the world learned of the right balance that could be worked wet over dry, used to heal cracks, had superior green strength, and other benefits described taught by Rosette Gault in this site in 1991. Before then cellulose fiber was only known to be as a green strength additive. Over the years many pioneers have joined in teaching and opening up the field. Thanks to the worldwide effort, more knowledge is now accessible and passed on to you.

P'Clays® ceramic paperclay are that group of rightly balanced cellulose fiber (paper pulp) bearing clays based from Porcelain, Stoneware, Terra Cotta, Majolica, China Clay, Earthenware, Whiteware, Raku, Sculpture, Potters, etc.

P'Slip ® are ceramic paperclay blended in liquid slurry form for adhesive, joins, patch, repairs, casting in or on plaster, and more.

The result, when finished and fired with glazes in a kiln, is nearly indistiguishable from a traditional clay. However, the finished weight can be less if desired.

Paperclay has distinct technical advantages to traditional clay for makers, artists, and designers.

It can be worked wet on dry at moisture state beyond beyond leatherhard. It can be can be repaired at the bone state also.

It has nearly double the green strength before fire than traditional clay so It is tough enough to transport more safely to and from the kilns.

It is strong enought to serve as its own "armature" so metal support is not needed. It fires lighter weight, can be porous or non-porous, vitrified, and more.

If you try mixing yourself, recyling your own paper, the right balance between the clay and the paper will be key to getting all high performance and "self healing" benefits that you will be introduced to on this site.
